Duke of Edinburgh International Award

Congratulations to every one of our 16 The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award recipients. It was fantastic to celebrate at Government House this week, alongside the families and members of the community who have supported the students.

As well as being able to add the award to their CV and college applications, they will now be part of the global DofE Alumni network. This includes access to the emerging leaders program, and makes them eligible to apply for grants, support and further global opportunities.

At FICS we have been lucky to have the support of the local community, with over 35 adult volunteers who have given up their own time to support participants by signing off physical activities, take part in the Adventurous Journey, mentor participants for a skill, or provided them with Volunteering opportunities. Without the brilliant support of this community, we would not be able to help our young people achieve all that they have. This places us in a great position to continue the good work we have been doing and grow our International Award Centre further.

The award gives a clear accreditation and recognition of our young people for their achievements, but it also allows us to quantify the benefits of the award for the wider community. With the average total impact of the Bronze award estimated at £2,200 per participant, this means our participants have contributed approximately £35,000 to the Falkland Islands. (Calculation based on figures from this source DOEIA-global-impact-report-2020_A4.pdf (intaward.org)). Our successful 2023 cohort have taken part in 343.5 hours of physical activities, 249 hours of skills based learning and volunteered 224 hours of service in the local community.
Well done to all and a huge thank you for all your help and support in getting our participants their Bronze award. Thanks must also go to Ms Shaw, as Coordinator of the award, along with several staff who have supported activities and kept the students on track. Thank you to Dan Biggs at Falklands Outdoors for training the participants and supporting delivery of the Adventurous Journey!
